How Do You Sustain Success?

Investing in your processes is a good thing, for the short term. Investing in your people is a great thing, for the short term and the long term. Think wisely when deciding what to invest time and money into.

So, now that we know how to teach our leaders, and we know how to help them to become highly effective leaders, how do we help them sustain and put into practice what we are teaching, or have taught them?

1. Putting it Into Practice

One of the biggest challenges that I find when teaching a person, a leadership principle is, how do I help them put into practice what they have learned, every day? I don’t want to phone them up every day to make sure they are working on themselves, that is micro-managing them.

What we need to do as leaders is ensure that we do what we say we are going to do. We want to make leadership development and people development a priority, so let’s ensure that we do that. Otherwise, what we teach, or what we role model will not be put into practice.

As you are reading this article, I am hoping that you are willing to look within yourself and be honest with yourself. Do you really want to become a highly effective leader? Do you really want to help others to do the same? Are you really willing to work on yourself, every day?

Take some time to reflect on who you are, and what type of leader you are. Take some time to think about what type of leader, and what type of person you want to become. I am hoping that you want to become the kind of leader who focusses on their team, and their people who surround them.

I am hoping that you want to increase your influence with your team, and your people. I am hoping that you want to have respect for your team, and for your people every day. Your team, and your people need you to be that person, and be that leader.

2. The World Needs You

Your organisation, your industry, your friends and family, and the entire world need you to become a highly effective leader to lead them and show them the way.

They need you to show them that they too can become highly effective leaders and lead the highly effective leadership movement that you can create.

Work on yourself every day, study leadership and personal growth, and teach your people to do the same. If you can do that you will have started a highly effective leadership movement, and you will help create more highly effective leaders.

I hope you can feel the passion I have for helping create a world of highly effective leaders. I hope you share the passion that together, along with many others can help create that world.

Imagine a world of highly effective leaders who work on themselves every day to build their character, so that they can influence others to do the same.

If you can imagine that world, then take what you are learning from me and pass it on to your people. They are craving our help.

When teaching your team, and the people around you, keep in mind that you are doing this to help them become the best person and the best leader they can be.

You are not doing this to improve the bottom line of the organisation, or improve the results of the team. They are by-products of improving the people. Take care of the people first, and the results, and numbers will take care of themselves.

We are respecting our people. We are not respecting our figures, numbers, reports, processes etc.

3. Creating More Leaders

Our return on investment is an organisation of highly effective leaders who want to increase their influence to help create more highly effective leaders.

On the other hand, high impact leaders never mention ROI. They know as I do, it doesn’t matter. They do it because of their character, not because of the ROI. If there is truly respect for the people, you don’t invest in the development of the people for the ROI. You do it because they matter.

I really hope you feel what I am writing on these pages. If you can feel the words and they are inspiring you, then that is when you know you are in the presence of highly effective leadership. If the words mean nothing to you, then keep searching for words that do mean something to you.

Quite often when I look at vision and mission statements on the walls of organisations, they don’t mean anything to me. The reason for that is a statement is not enough. We need to be shown vision. That is why it is called a vision, we need to see it, and we need to feel it.

If organisations do not invest the profits they make in their people, then they are not going to develop their people into the best people and leaders they can be.

If they don’t have their people at their best, then they are not going to produce the best results for the organisation, and the organisation will not achieve the most profits possible. It is a vicious circle, but it is extremely simple.

4. Investing

Invest most of your money and most of your time into your people, and you will produce the best people, the best leaders, the best results, the most profits, and the most fulfilled organisation possible.

Organisational leaders need to take the courage and change how they see their business. Business is not about resources, processes, products, profits. Business is about people. Without your best people, you have no resources, processes, products or profits.

As a highly effective leader, it is your mission to help create a team, and an organisation of highly effective leaders. How do you do that? You work on yourself every day to be the best person and leader you can be.

You teach your people to do the same. You live what you teach and practice what you preach.

If you can do that with your senior leaders, then you can leverage them to invest time and money into the people, so you have more leverage to help them become the best people and leaders they can be.

If you can create an organisation of highly effective leaders, imagine what kind of organisation you could have.

Value your people, and you will have more valuable people. Care for your people, and they will care for their people. Invest in your people, and they will invest in their people. Respect your people, and they will respect their people.

It’s not about the results, and it’s not about the profits. It’s about the people. Take care of your people, and the results, and profits will take care of themselves.

  1. This an excellent article on how to maintain success and how you can help others, but only if we examine ourselves daily will we know how we can best transfer our knowledge to others to become leaders or managers in the future. I am sure that this article of yours will be useful to many to find a solution for what they are looking for. 🙂

    1. Hi Zvezdan,

Keep sharing your knowledge with your people and helping them to succeed. When yu help them to succeed, you will succeed.

      All the best,

      Tom

  2. I feel like #1 and #3 are key here. Putting into practice what one has learned and then not only applying it to yourself but into others to create new leaders is a big mind shift that has to occur if you want to reach your leadership goals. Nice post!

    1. Hi Eric,

      I appreciate your comment.

Keep working on yourself to become the success that your people want and need you to be.

      All the best,

      Tom

  3. It is essential to take care of people first. Not everyone can be a leader, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a learnable skill. Those who are born leaders are rare and without investing in themselves whatever the form of investment was, even the best can’t go far. A great article, Tom!

    1. Hi Alisa,

      Thank you for your comment.

Leadership definitely is a learnable skill as everybody in the world has the ability to influence another person. Therefore, everybody in the world has the ability to lead.

Keep leading and inspiring your people to be their best selves.

      All the best,

      Tom

  4. Great article here Tom! Your second point about developing one’s self is so apt. I’ve heard this saying a lot “ You can’t give what you don’t have”. What you give out is actually a measure of what you have on your inside. This is why personal development is key and pivotal. When you build the people in your team or organization, the organization itself grows. This is leveraging on human capital. Only leaders can raise leaders! I couldn’t agree more with you Tom!

    Cheers.

    1. Hi Femi,

Thank you for your very kind words, they mean the world to me.

You’re right, you cannot give what you do not have is my whole philosophy. Leadership is about others, but it starts with you.

You must develop yourself first before you can help others to develop themselves and follow your example.

Keep working on yourself every day and keep inspiring your people to do the same.

      All the best,

      Tom
