The generation before us laid the foundations for us to succeed. The generation before them laid the foundations for them to succeed. It is now up to us to lay the foundations for the generations ahead of us to succeed. How are we going to do that? By growing into a highly effective leader.
The level of importance you lay on your success depends on how far you want to go to help others become successful. When we talk about success, we are usually talking about you and the success you can and have achieved.
But, to become a highly effective leader you must see your success as the success of others and how important that is to you. As a highly effective leader, how far do you want to help another person become successful? That is the question you must ask yourself.
1. Making Sacrifices
The most successful and highly effective leaders in the world only see success as their ability to help others become successful.
When they eventually achieve that, they want more and more because that is when they feel most fulfilled, that is when they see themselves as achieving success. There is nothing more important to a highly effective leader than helping another person achieve what they want.

So, if you want to grow into a highly effective leader and experience the success that a highly effective leader has, then you must start to make sacrifices in your life for the benefit of others.
The reason for this is so you can help them to grow into a highly effective leader and then they can do the same for others. The original vision that you had for yourself is now a lot bigger because it is about helping others.
You can’t only make sacrifices for yourself; you must sacrifice for others. Your vision is growing in the same way as you are growing, it is compounding just like when you help others, and they help others, and they help others.
There are not many people around the world who are willing to make sacrifices for others, in fact they aren’t willing to make sacrifices for themselves either.
The people who are willing to make those sacrifices for themselves and others are the ones who have grown or are growing into highly effective leaders. By helping others to grow into highly effective leaders they are multiplying their influence through them.
It is like a snowball effect of highly effective leaders developing more highly effective leaders who then develop more highly effective leaders.
How do you know you are on the right path to becoming a highly effective leader?
2. Personal Growth
You are on the constant look out for personal growth opportunities. You are fully aware that the only time you can grow is when you are outside of your comfort zone, so you become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
You know that 80% of your best results come from your character and 20% come from competency, so you are more focussed on your character development rather than your competency development.
You understand that because 80% of your results come from character then the best areas to focus on and develop are the weaker areas. With only 20% of your results coming from competency, you understand that the best areas to focus on and develop are your stronger areas.
You are not a selfish person, meaning you are happy to share your knowledge to help others instead of hoarding it like a lot of insecure people and leaders do. You see learning and education as a lifelong journey, and you want to learn something new every day, just like highly effective leaders do.
As you have this attitude this puts you in a great position to help others climb the leadership ladder that you too are climbing. You don’t want to just get to the top of the ladder and stay there, you want to climb back down and give someone a helping hand onto the next step up.
3. Your Purpose
You have the mindset of working on yourself and helping others until you are no longer physically and mentally able to anymore. Meaning, you are not looking for a date to retire or keeping an eye on your pension for when you stop working.
The reason for this is because you love what you do, and the thought of retiring and stopping helping people fills you with dread. You don’t see your work as work, you love it so much that it’s almost like a beautiful hobby to you.
What you do is why you believe you are on this earth. It is your “why”, your purpose and your true calling. It is not your career; it is your life’s work, and it benefits not only you but so many other people that you help.
You focus on learning more and more specialised knowledge in your area of talent, and it is a lifelong journey. You see learning and education as something that never ends. You ask yourself, “why would I stop learning about my “why”, my purpose and my passion?”
You don’t care if it’s not the norm, or you learn about something that not many have learned. You are not one to follow the crowd when it comes to your passion & purpose. You are on your path, and you need to constantly learn while travelling down that path.
4. Helping Others

You help others to become successful in their lives. If success means helping them to become wealthy, then so be it. The reason for this is because you know what true wealth is, the ability to produce wealth. You know true wealth it is not about having lots of money.
You know that to become successful then you need to make yourself more valuable. So, you show people why value is what we should focus on, and not what will make us successful.
When you do this, you are helping people climb the leadership ladder and the success ladder. This is what makes you a highly effective leader.
You know who you are, and you know that what you do matters to so many people. You have chosen to work on yourself and grow into a highly effective leader for the good of yourself and others.
When you make the decision to help others, without you knowing it you will start to live a wealthier life. You will also be helping others to do the same when they follow your example. Look forward to making that decision for yourself and others.

All the best,

We cannot help others without helping ourselves. Conversely, when we judge other we no only do a disservice to them, but we hurt ourselves as well. Leaving a positive impact and road for our future generation to follow is essential to their growth and development. The wise decisions and choices we make today will help create a future that greatly benefit those who follow. All the Best, Joseph
Hi Joseph,
Thank you for sharing your insights, means so much to me.
I couldn’t agree with you more that we can’t help others without helping ourselves.
Keep working on yourself every day with the mindset of helping your people too, leading them by example and inspiring them to help others too.
All the best,
Tom
Hi Tom, I agree with Joseph, it’s like being a role model, and showing the right way to do things. Within my environment, and working with children, they are learning from us all the time. How you, talk, expressions you make, how you react to situations and how you put yourself out there.
Having a course that would teach those who want to excel in one’s leadership is a plus especially at work and working within a team.
So keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing.
Julia.😊
Hi Julia,
I appreciate you for sharing your thoughts on my post, means the world to me.
Keep being the role model you already are for the children you work with, and for their parents too showing them how much you care.
All the best,
Tom
Beautifully written, Tom. Your passion for leadership and service really shines through. The way you describe helping others as the true measure of success is something I deeply resonate with.
I especially appreciated your thoughts on personal growth and sacrifice. For me, it’s a powerful reminder that real leadership begins with who we are, not just what we do.
You’ve always struck me as someone with genuine heart and purpose. Reading this was a lovely reminder of that. Thanks for sharing yet another gem of your leadership wisdom!
Hi Lucie,
It is my pleasure and I am pleased that my article has resonated with you again, means the world.
Leadership is about others, but it starts with you and as you say…who you are.
Keep working on yourself every day so you are able to help others too.
All the best,
Tom
