How Far Will You Go?

If you have a limited mindset, then the opportunities for you are virtually none-existent. If you have a limitless mindset, then the opportunities for you are endless.

Are you willing to do what the most successful people in the world had to do to get where they are today? When most people look at successful people, they usually think to themselves, “I want what they’ve got.” Or “I want to be where they are.”

1. Making Sacrifices

When really, they should be thinking to themselves, “I am willing to go through what they had to go through to get to where they are today.” So, I ask you again, are you willing to do what the most successful people in the world had to do to get to where they are today?

This is not an easy question to answer, as there are two parts to answering it. The first part is making the decision to say, “yes, I am willing to do what the most successful people had to do.” Or “no, I am not willing.”

The first part doesn’t require you to make any sacrifices. The second part to answering the question does require you to make sacrifices and pay the same price as the people you want to emulate.

The second part of the question requires you to take the action and do what the most successful people in the world had to do to get to where they are today.

When you make a sacrifice, how much discipline you have developed will determine how valuable the sacrifice is to you. The more discipline you develop, the more valuable the sacrifice will be to you. A sacrifice is giving something up for you to get something in return.

As an example, you are reading this article, so the sacrifice is the time you are investing in reading it, and the time you invest in taking action on what you learn.

The time you invest on reading this and other materials and taking action on what you learn could be quite substantial, and it is time that you cannot invest on anything else in your life. You cannot put this time into going on holiday or spending time with friends or family, it has gone.

Sacrifice and discipline go hand in hand when it comes to your growth. Sacrifice opens the door to growth, and gives you the opportunity to grow, it is not what enables you to grow. Discipline is the only thing that will enable you to grow.

2. Having The Discipline

Discipline is how you will make the additional sacrifices to open more opportunities to grow and take action on what you are learning. Sacrifice comes first, discipline comes second, growth comes third.

To keep your growth continuous, you must repeat the three steps of the root to growth. Make a sacrifice by giving something up, take action through discipline, achieve your growth.

Make a sacrifice by giving something up, take action through discipline, achieve your growth. Make a sacrifice by giving something up, take action through discipline, achieve your growth.

Most people throughout the world will only do what is needed to get by, and the reason for this is because they don’t have the discipline required to grow continuously. You, however, are different. You have the discipline to continuously grow yourself and pursue your purpose in life. Don’t you?

You must invest your time in learning, and then take action on what you learn to become an expert in your area of purpose and passion. Do not waste your time on things that have nothing to do with your vision and purpose.

To become an expert, you don’t necessarily have to attend university or college, but you do need to educate yourself by reading books, taking online courses, watching videos and associating with other experts in the same field.

If your vision and purpose require you to go to university or college, then obviously you will need to attend and retrieve the right qualification.

But to do that you must still apply and repeat the three steps of the root to growth. Make a sacrifice by giving something up, take action through discipline, achieve your growth.

If you don’t apply the three steps of the root to growth, and then repeat them, then you will pay the price. By not having the discipline to carry out these steps then your continuous growth and self-development will stall.

As you stall you will eventually be taking steps backward instead of forward. The world is changing every day at a very fast rate, and we must change with it. If we don’t change then we are not growing. If you are not growing, then your vision will not become a reality.

If you are not growing, then you cannot pursue your purpose and passion. What you will also see is people in your field will start to get a head of you. Although you don’t compare yourself against anybody, it will still make you feel bad if people get ahead of you because you have not taken action.

3. Taking The Right Action

When making a sacrifice through being disciplined, make sure you are very deliberate with the action you take. By that I mean plan the action out, be methodical and ensure that this is exactly the right action to take.

It is ok to make mistakes and learn from them, but you don’t want to make a catastrophic mistake because you didn’t think your action through. Be as highly effective and efficient as you can be and develop a highly effective plan just like a highly effective leader and person would do.

Ask yourself the question, “What is the most important action I should take?” When you identify this action, think to yourself that if you don’t do it, everything else won’t matter. So, it is imperative that you take this action.

What you are doing is investing in your own personal growth, so if you haven’t done this before, this is where you need to start. Take your time when making the decision on your important actions.

Think of a list of actions that MUST be taken to help you get from where you are now to where you want to be. Then put them in the right order of importance.

4. Your Character

Most people throughout the world will put the easy actions first and the harder ones towards the end. They do this for the obvious reason…it is easy. Highly effective leaders and people won’t do that, they will put them in the order of importance, and they will carry out the most important action first.

They do this because they have a very strong character, and as you are developing your character, you need to do the same. Don’t waste the sacrifice you want to make by doing the easy actions first.

It is important that you design your own circumstances. Don’t do what most people do and just accept your circumstances.

Plan your own situation. Don’t do what most people do and be the victim.

  1. Hi Tom,

I totally agree with you regarding sacrifice, discipline, and character. It’s so easy to admire someone’s success from the outside without truly appreciating what they had to give up and grow through. Thank you for reminding us of the real work behind a meaningful life.

It brought to mind all those so-called “overnight successes” — like the Beatles, who seemed to appear out of nowhere, but had actually spent over two years grinding it out in tiny clubs in Hamburg, playing seven nights a week.! (As a keyboard player, I know quite a few things about practising for hours and hours..;)

Or J.K. Rowling, writing in cafés as a single mum, facing rejection after rejection. These stories are powerful because they reveal the truth: success isn’t a moment, it’s a process of sacrifice and daily discipline, just as you’ve outlined so clearly.

I especially loved the way you described discipline as the enabler of growth — that is so, so true! You’ve clearly walked this path with integrity and vision, and I have deep respect for that. Every aspiring and existing leader should read this!

    1. Hi Lucie,

Thank you for sharing your great insights on my post, means so much to me.

It’s amazing you mention The Beatles as I am from the same city of Liverpool as they are 🙂

J.K. Rowling is one of the most inspirational authors of all time for me, and what she accomplished as a single mum going through rejection after rejection as you say was unbelievable.

I hope people reading this post can read your comment too and learn from you just as much as they can learn from me.

Keep making the right sacrifices in your life and having the right discipline to see them through. Keep helping your people to do the same and if you ever need my help then please don’t hesitate to ask me.

      All the best,

      Tom

  2. That’s so incredibly thoughtful and kind, Tom, thank you!

And how nice to know that you come from the legendary Liverpool. I first visited it in 2001, spent a lot of time in the music shops trying out the keyboards, and then went to see the Cavern repeatedly. I loved the wall at the back of the stage, with the names of the many Merseyside bands who played there apart from the Fab Four (e.g., Gerry and the Pacemakers, or The Searchers.)

Thank you for bringing up all these nice memories and for all your inspiration.

    1. Hi Lucie,

I love your story of visiting my hometown of Liverpool.

You should go back there with your amazing band and play their famous venues (including The Cavern…obviously :))

It is my pleasure to help you and thank you doe sharing your inspiration with the world every day too my friend.

      All the best,

      Tom

  3. That first question: “I am willing to go through what they had to go through to get to where they are today.” Is such an important question to ask yourself, and a very important shift in mindset and attitude.
So many people want the rewards without realizing what it actually takes to get them. So yes, discipline is crucial, but I also really like your point about deliberate action. You can spend a lot of energy spinning your wheels without going anywhere if you’re not being mindful of where you put in the effort.
Thank you for a great read!
