Values Determine Your Thoughts

When we teach somebody, our objective must be to help them think more positively.

What you value is the foundation of the results you produce. So, when you decide your values, you are basically deciding what your results will be. Ensure you make the right decisions when it comes to your values.

1. Different Values

The different values you have will lead to different results that you produce. If your values are drastically different, then your results will also be drastically different.

Your thoughts are influenced by your values. Your feelings are influenced by your thoughts. Your actions are influenced by your feelings. Your actions determine your results.

Your values must come from you, nobody else. If you are a person of integrity, then you will align your values with the principles that we live by.

An example of a principle that we live by is fairness. Throughout your life you have never been taught in school, college, university or anywhere else how to be treated fairly or unfairly.

But you know when it happens to you or somebody else because it is a feeling that you have. You can feel when you are being treated unfairly.

Everyone throughout the world has values. Some people have good values, and some people have bad values. With the values you have, ask yourself “Do my values align with the principles in life that we live by?”

E.g., the example of fairness I just described. Every person understands the principles we live by, so it is very important that our values align with them.

You have an internal way of how you live your life that only comes from you. You set the direction every day for what way you want to go that day, how you want to behave and what you want to do. You know when something is wrong, and that you shouldn’t do it.

You also know when something is right, and that you should do it. It is 100% your decision if you do the right thing or the wrong thing, nobody can make that decision for you.

2. Responsibility

You were born with the free will to do right or wrong, and whether you should live by the principles in life, or whether you should go against them.

Are you a person who is willing to accept responsibility, or are you a person who prefers to let others accept responsibility? When you look within yourself and are willing to find a solution to a problem rather than letting others provide the solution, that is when you accept responsibility.

When you look outwards and blame others for problems that happen, you are looking for them to take responsibility. You will have heard people say things like, “This hasn’t got anything to do with me,” or “Why are you making me miserable?”

These are statements that people who look outwards and blame others will say. If you are a person who looks within then you will say things like, “How can I help the situation?” or “What can we do differently to solve this problem?”

After learning this, where do you start with your values? The more values you develop within yourself, the more your influence will increase. The more your influence increases, the more you will be growing into a highly effective leader.

3. Increasing Your Influence

By growing into a highly effective leader, developing your values, increasing your influence, you will be opening your options and opportunities.

As you begin to master your values, you are increasing your influence in a positive way with the people around you, but the people around you will be leveraging your positive influence. The values you develop within you are the foundation on how you develop your thoughts.

When I was a graduate engineer within the rail industry, I had a mentor called Ron and he would give me all sorts of advice. But, when I first met him and we had our first conversation, he asked me, “Tom, where do you want to go?”

I was young, and all I had in my mind was my next role within the rail industry. But Ron wasn’t thinking just of the rail industry, he was thinking of my whole life.

I replied to him, “I want to get to your level of engineering director.” Ron told me, “That is great, but what is it you want out of your life? There is more to life than work.” When he told me that, he made me think. “He then followed up with, start from where you are now, and don’t give up.”

I love sharing that short story because ever since then, I have thought differently on what I want out of my life, and how I can help others to do the same. Hence, writing this article and my other articles, and creating the other materials on leadership, personal growth, and influence.

4. Thinking Differently

You are reading this article, and you may be at the starting point to go wherever it is you want to go in your life. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? Who do you want to help? Who do you want to influence? How do you want to influence?

You can become a highly effective leader by helping do develop current and aspiring leaders into highly effective leaders so that, they can help develop current and aspiring leaders into highly effective leaders.

You can become a highly effective leader by creating an environment that focusses on people and helps them to learn to lead, grow and increase their influence for the good of others.

You can increase your influence throughout the world, but you must be deliberate with it. This will not happen by accident or if you just wait for it to happen.

You must make things happen by working on yourself every day to strive towards reaching your full potential and be your best self every day. Comparing yourself against who you were yesterday and doing your best to be better today.

WHAT you do and the action you take is how you develop your potential. HOW you do what you do is how you keep improving your performance. WHY you do what you do is how you live your purpose every day.

As your WHAT, HOW and WHY intertwine, you will be growing into a highly effective leader for the good of yourself and others.

There is no such thing as the best values to develop or the correct values. Only you can make the decision of what values are the best and are correct for you. Your values come from what your purpose is and what you believe in. Think about what is most important in your life. How much do you want to help people? How much of a difference do you want to make in your life, the lives of others, and the world? Only you can answer these questions.
