Decision making is extremely powerful within our own lives. The best decisions are made when we take responsibility for our decisions, when we have the humility to accept the consequences of our decisions, and we have the courage to face and remove the obstacles that come in our way from the decisions we make.
To be able to create the future you want for yourself, and to create the future you want that will help others too, you must make the decision to accept the responsibility for that future. You must have the humility and the courage to accept any consequences and face them head on.
1. Trusting Yourself
I talk a lot about trust and having trust in others, but when creating the future, you want for yourself you must have trust in yourself. By creating your future, you are creating opportunities, and you must trust yourself that those opportunities are coming.
You don’t know what those opportunities are going to be yet, but you must begin preparations for them now. You can’t see those opportunities, but you must trust yourself that you will eventually see them. When that will be you don’t know, but you know they will come.
When put into practice what you are learning from my articles, you will surprise yourself and be amazed at the future you are going to create for yourself.

At this moment in time, it is like you are going for a walk late at night, but all the streetlamps are broken and there’s not much light coming from the surroundings, so you’re in the dark. But you get your phone out of your pocket and use the light from the phone as your torch, so you can see ahead of you.
But you have the instinct of knowing where you want to go, so you must use that instinct and move in that direction as you are walking.
As you start to move in that direction you will start to see things that you haven’t seen before because suddenly, the streetlamps are turning on, one by one the more you keep walking ahead.
2. Your Vision
You are holding in your hand a phone that is helping you to move forward, along with the streetlamps turning on one by one (taking responsibility). You are finding this hard work because you are putting in the effort to keep walking in the right direction.
But, instead of doing the same thing, why not try something different?
Your personal growth and the creation of your future are the same thing, but you may need to make the decision to head in different directions here and there, go down a different street than usual but eventually end up at your destination (vision).
Have you ever been on an aeroplane when the pilot doesn’t have a clue where he/she is going? Neither have I. You will be doing something very similar if you don’t know what future you want to create for yourself.
Others will be making decisions for you and your future will be created for you, and that is not a good place to be. You need to make the decision on whether you want to navigate to the future you want or make the decision not to.
If you decide not to then you will be like an airline pilot who has no clue where he/she is flying the aeroplane. If you are in this position, then there is no hope.
There are so many people throughout the world who don’t create their own futures, they are created for them, and they end up where they are by accident. As I have said, just ending up somewhere is not a good place to be.
By not making the decision to create their own future, without knowing it they have made the decision to not create their future and just drift through life, ending up at a job they hate and with s
somebody they may not even like or love. This is very unfortunate that so many people live like this. Is this what you want?
3. Life Changing Decisions
You have the ability to make a decision that will either change your life for the better, keep you where you currently are, or make it worse. We all have that power to make that kind of decision for ourselves, and even by not making this decision, we are actually making the decision to do nothing.
You already know that you don’t HAVE to do anything. You can carry on as you are because you might already be happy in your life. But, if you are not then it is time to change that.
It is time to create the future you want for yourself. It is time to make the right decision for yourself that will ultimately benefit others as you strive towards the future you see. The decisions you make every day determine your future. If you make the wrong decision, then your future will start to look bleak.
If you make the right decision, then your future will start to look better. It is all up to you because you are the only one who controls what happens in your future.
Too many people throughout the world just settle for what happens to them in their future, they give up on striving towards their vision. You don’t have to do that. You can make the decision to create the best future you can for yourself.
We all make thousands of decisions a day, and those decisions shape the life we have, and they also create the future for ourselves. Have you ever sat down and thought about the future you want to create for yourself? Have you ever seen your vision and what the best future for yourself could look like?
You don’t have a crystal ball so you can’t guarantee what your future is going to look like, or what will happen to you. But you can certainly create the future you want for yourself. The power we all have to do that is amazing, and too many people don’t do it.
I remember when I first started taking personal growth seriously, and the first thing I wanted to do was to change my current circumstances. So, I thought I needed to change things around me, maybe change the people I hung around with, change where I lived and change my job.
4. Improving Yourself
But I later learned and thought to myself, “Wait a minute, I need to improve and change myself first.” If I didn’t improve myself, how could changing everything else improve my circumstances?
I was the only one who controlled my decisions, and I was the only own who could take the responsibility for the results my decisions made.
You are exactly where you are now because of the decisions you have made throughout your life, not because of somebody or something else. It is all down to you. If you don’t improve or change yourself then you will remain exactly where you are, and your circumstances won’t change.
I was blaming others and other things for why I was where I was, and why I was unhappy with my circumstances. I needed to take responsibility, and so do you. You won’t be able to improve yourself or your circumstances until you accept that responsibility.
A lot of people live their lives every day by blaming others for how their life is and the state of their current circumstances. They don’t give one thought about themselves or how they need to improve and change. If you don’t improve or change yourself then there is no way you can make your life better.

The reason for this is because you don’t have to take any action or put in any effort if you blame somebody else. You don’t have to take any responsibility because you are “slope shouldering” what has happened to you onto somebody else.
However, if you were to accept the responsibility for what has happened, then you can improve and change your life. You can improve and change yourself, and you will start to see your circumstances change because you are putting in the work and effort.
Don’t take the easy way out by blaming others for what has happened in your life and the circumstances you are in. By accepting responsibility and improving yourself, you are developing your character at the same time.
I know you will embrace the changes you need to make to improve yourself because it’s all a decision, and I know you will make the right ones.
Your decisions should resemble your vision and your dreams, not what worries you or puts fear into you.

All the best,

Thank you, Tom, for sharing such a thoughtful and grounded reflection. Your message about the power of decision-making and taking full responsibility for our future really resonated with me, especially as I have recently started walking the leadership path in my network marketing business. The analogy of walking in the dark with only a small light is a great reminder that clarity often comes through action, not before it.
I also appreciate your emphasis on trusting ourselves and being willing to take new directions when needed — that’s often where real growth happens. It’s easy to fall into the trap of waiting for things to change externally, but as you’ve pointed out so well, it all starts with inner work and conscious decisions.
A valuable read — I’m taking several insights from this to reflect on in my own journey. Thanks again.

Great article on decision-making, Tom. It’s important to trust ourselves and take responsibility for everything that occurs. We are in the driver’s seat, and each choice is important. We make decisions based on our experience and due diligence, and then we can let go and allow our intuitive insights to flow as well. When we take responsibility and trust ourselves, our left and right brains are operating at optimal levels. Best, Joseph
Hi Joseph,
Thank you for sharing your comment and your very kind words also.
I am so pleased that this article has resonated with you my friend. I couldn’t agree more how important it is to trust ourselves before trusting anything or anyone else first.
Keep being in the driver’s seat and making the best decisions for yourself and for your people.
All the best,
Tom
Once again a great post Tom, I also love the analogy of walking along a dark Street and using your phone light for guidance. I have come across where others have blamed those around them, but really should improve themselves first, making those subtle changes, can have a different knock – on- effect!
When you are wrapped up in blame, like ‘nobody likes me, or everyone thinks I am rubbish at……’ Then look within and ask ‘WHY?’ reflect, and learn to improve, ask those around you take it on the chin, so to speak.
Thanks for sharing Tom, lots here for one to take note, and great advice, and of course training that can help with decision making.
Julia. ?
